Thu, 21 Jul 2011 11:52:06 CDT
The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation received the inaugural Pecan Grove of the Year award from the Oklahoma Pecan Growers' Association at the organization's recent annual meeting in Bartlesville, Okla.
The award is presented to the grower with the overall best grove in the state. Assistant Professor Charles Rohla, Ph.D., horticulturist, oversees the Noble Foundation's pecan groves and accepted the award on behalf of the organization.
"It is truly an honor to receive this award. It is nice to know that the work done by our entire team has been recognized and valued," Rohla said. "We keep our groves well maintained so we can produce the best possible research. The Noble Foundation's pecan groves are designed to provide answers to questions regional pecan growers will have. We hope that through our research we can help them improve their operations and be more productive."
This is the first time the Pecan Grove of the Year award has been given by the association. The award selection committee designed the award to recognize an individual grower's quality practices.
"We wanted to give this award for a grove that is highly maintained and can be an example for other growers," said Jeff Staggs, award selection committee and association board member. "The committee looked at a number of different pecan groves, and the Noble Foundation was selected because of its high standard of management and overall excellence."
The Noble Foundation highlighted regional pecan production and its local research in the Summer 2011 issue of Legacy. Articles for Legacy can be viewed by clicking here.
