Cattle Feeder Operations Sharing More Data with Producers
Thu, 25 Aug 2011 10:25:56 CDT
Cow-calf producers usually settle for basic feedback information when it comes to cattle feeder operations. However, data sharing is becoming more common in cattle feeder operations across the nation. Tom Fanning of Buffalo Feeders, Dale Moore of Cattlemen's Choice Feedyard, and Sam Hands of Triangle H, all provide data to their customers simply because they asked for it.
Fanning says more and more customers are asking for more data and it is beneficial in improving their cow herd, bull herd, or overall performance of their cattle on the range. However, Moore says the exchange of data is a two way street and they will provide their customers with whatever information they can provide them.
Hands has developed an index system that ranks the cattle, like 100 head would be ranked from 1 to 100, and that table goes back to the producer. This table helps them to find the bottom 10% of their cattle genetically, which they may choose to remove from the program and advance with higher quality cattle says Hands.
