Cattlemen's Leadership Academy Explores Different Segments of Beef Industry and Production Practices

Fri, 12 Aug 2011 09:07:12 CDT

Cattlemen's Leadership Academy Explores Different Segments of Beef Industry and Production Practices The second of four sessions scheduled for the 17th annual Cattlemen's Leadership Academy class took place on August 8 & 9. During the two-day event, CLA class members (all Oklahoma Ranchers and members of the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association) were exposed first-hand to different segments of the beef industry.

AdvancePierre Food Company located in Enid, Okla., gladly welcomed this group of beef producers to their facilities. AdvancePierre Food Company is a fully integrated manufacturer of value-added proteins, Philly steaks and handheld sandwiches. The group of ranchers toured AdvancePierre's Enterprise Facility, a premier manufacturing facility for "ready-to-eat" foods.

"During the plant tour we saw hamburger being made into patties, and then cooked, frozen and packaged for shipping - all a process to add value to beef," said Tony Bowman, CLA member and rancher near Stillwater, Okla. "As Ranchers, we are always seeking ways to add value to our product - beef. It's comforting to know that different segments of our industry our working hard to do the same," Bowman said.

CLA members were also given the opportunity to visit a beef fabrication plant. Creekstone Farms located in Arkansas City, Kansas, process only the finest premium Black Angus beef, all born and bred in the USA. The folks at Creekstone seek out the cream of the crop when it comes to Black Angus cattle, all in an effort to increase consistency of delicious, tender beef.

"The tour at Creekstone was very enlightening. We saw the whole process from start to finish . . . cattle receiving, removing hides, carcass grading . . . we even saw the boxes being folded and put together for shipping the beef," Bowman said.

In addition to these tours, CLA members were encouraged to tell their stories as beef producers and be advocates for the beef industry. Daren Williams, of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, and Dr. John Hutcheson, of Merck Animal Health, were on-hand to provide tips when communicating the beef message. Both of these presentations provided important information to producers and lit a spark for these young ranchers to rise as leaders in the beef industry.

"The Cattlemen's Leadership Academy has allowed me to grow personally and professionally. I have learned how to keep up with an ever-changing market, environment, needs of my consumers and set meaningful goals. As a cattle rancher, I produce safe, nutritious beef products for all of those beef-loving people out there," said Becca McMillan, CLA member and rancher near Ardmore, Okla.

Other class members of the 17th Annual OCA Cattlemen's Leadership Academy include: Rex Anderson, Shawnee; Justin Behrens, Durant; Danny Bogard, Oklahoma City; Chuck Coffey, Springer; Ruth Coffey, Springer; Amy Dalmont, Stillwater; Dell Farris, Addington; Isaac Fisher, Chattanooga; Cody Goodknight, Chattanooga; Peyton Hale, Bray; Mike Henderson, Wynnewood; Becca Lasich, Stillwater; Jet McCoy, Ada; Aly Nixon, Freedom; Te Peach, Chester; GK Rossander, Glencoe; Travis Schnaithman, Garber; Joe Voth, Kingfisher; and Chris Wilson, Tuttle.

The OCA and CLA extend special thanks to the hosts for their time and hospitality. Also, thank you to the CLA sponsors for their support; 17th Annual CLA sponsors include: Farm Credit of East Central Oklahoma, Merck Animal Health, Hitch Enterprises, The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Haines Cattle Company, Oklahoma Beef Council, Reproduction Enterprises, Inc., Pickens Auctions, Andrews Davis Law, Farm Data Services, Vitalix Supplements, Grissom LLC, McKay Ford, the Central National Bank of Alva and CLA Alumni.

Since 1953, the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association has been advocating, communicating and educating on behalf of Oklahoma's Ranching Families. Today, the OCA represents more than 5500 Oklahoma ranching families. The OCA's Cattlemen's Leadership Academy was created more than 17 years ago with the intention of cultivating leadership and providing educational opportunities to a select group of OCA members. Participants are selected through a nomination process each year. The CLA programs targets OCA members/beef producers between the ages of 20 and 45.
