Thu, 06 Oct 2011 16:35:49 CDT
Oklahomans Scott Dewald, Terry Stuart Forst and Don Schieber have been announced as the 2011 Distinguished Alumnus in Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources recipients by Oklahoma State University.
"The successes of each stand as a testament to the positive influence our graduates can and do have in their chosen career fields and in their communities," said Robert E. Whitson, vice president, dean and director of OSU's Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural
Resources. "They embody a standard of sustained excellence to be held in the highest regard."
Dewald, a native of Fargo and current resident of Dover, earned his Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural communications from Oklahoma State University in 1985, and conducted post-graduate work in speech communications and consultancy at OSU from 1987 to 1989.
He is best known throughout Oklahoma as the executive vice-president of both the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association and Oklahoma Cattlemen's Foundation, as well as publisher of the "Oklahoma Cowman" magazine and senior adviser of the Oklahoma Junior Cattlemen's Association. Dewald has served in all four positions since 1996.
In his roles with OCA and OCF, Dewald works closely with members of the Oklahoma congressional delegation, the state legislature, Oklahoma Governor's office and other state officials in negotiating and drafting legislation, policy and rules that reflect the interests of
Oklahoma's beef producers. He is also active in the National Cattlemen's Beef Association.
Dewald has provided insight and input to OSU's Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources through its State Advisory Council since 1996. He also serves on the advisory board of the Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at OSU, and is active in
the Midwest International Ag Consortium, Sirloin Club of Oklahoma and Stockyards City Main Street Program.
Forst earned her Bachelor of Science degree in animal science from Oklahoma State University in 1976, embarking on a career that would see her earn many honors, including being named the 2007 recipient of the OSU Department of Animal Science Master Breeder Award.
For the past 21 years, she has been the manager of the 7S Stuart Ranch near Caddo and Waurika, a 45,000-acre cattle and horse operation that is the oldest, continuous family operated ranch in Oklahoma. The ranch is one of the most profitable in the southwestern United States, and has been honored for its management practices by the Beef Improvement Federation and Society for Range Management.
An avid horsewoman, Forst's equine programs earned the ranch a Best Remuda award from the American Quarter Horse Association. Two horses bred by Forst have been named AQHA World Show Superhorse.
Forst currently serves as president of the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association, a role she seemed destined for given that she was herding bulls as a 4-year-old "wrangler" alongside her father, Robert T. Stuart.
A native and resident of Ponca City, Schieber earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in agronomy from Oklahoma State University in 1968 and 1970, respectively, and then assumed the key leadership role of superintendent of OSU's North-Central Oklahoma Agronomy Research Station, a position he held until 1973.
Though already operating Schieber Farms with his wife Cecelia, his joining the private sector in 1974 led to longtime programs that continue to provide services to farmers in Oklahoma and surrounding areas. Schieber Farms specializes in wheat, milo and soybean harvest,
as well as custom seed and grain cleaning on the farm and in grain elevators.
He is a charter member of Oklahoma Genetics Inc., and served as 2008 chairman of the Oklahoma Crop Improvement Association and as 2009-2010 chairman of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission.
The 1964 Ponca City High School graduate completed his yearlong term as chairman of U.S. Wheat Associates the marketing arm of wheat producers across the nation this summer. Schieber previously served as the organization's vice-chairman from 2009-2010 and as secretary/treasurer from 2008-2009.
The three 2011 Distinguished Alumnus in Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources recipients will be formally honored during OSU Homecoming activities Oct. 28-29.
