Meet the 2011 National Proficiency Winner in Diversified Horticulture- Joshua Conaway of Ringwood

The Agricultural Proficiency Awards honor FFA members who, through their Supervised Agricultural Experiences have developed specialized skills that they can apply toward their future careers. Students can compete for awards in 47 areas covering everything from Agricultural Communications to Wildlife Management. Each award area has two categories, placement and entrepreneurship.

Placement proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to employment, apprenticeships, or internships at an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Entrepreneurship proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to ownership of an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Proficiency awards are given out at the local, state and national levels. .

Here at the 2011 National FFA Convention, Oklahoma brought a total of 15 finalists to Indianapolis, good for a tie for fourth place in the number of proficiency finalists on a state by state basis. At the end of the Friday afternoon session, Oklahoma laid claim to three national Proficiency Awards.

Diversified horticulture- Joshua Conaway, Ringwood FFA

Joshua Conaway of the Ringwood FFA Chapter in Oklahoma started his lawn care business with the express desire to save money for college. But through his experiences and what he learned in his agriculture classes, it has developed into a passion. He has expanded his business beyond mowing lawns and trimming hedges to include raising water pond plants, ground cover and pond goldfish.

We talked with Joshua backstage after he was presented with his national award. Click on the listen bar below to hear our conversation with him.
