Placement proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to employment, apprenticeships, or internships at an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Proficiency awards are given out at the local, state and national levels. .
Here at the 2011 National FFA Convention, Oklahoma brought a total of 15 finalists to Indianapolis, good for a tie for fourth place in the number of proficiencies on a state by state basis. At the end of the afternoon session, Oklahoma laid claim to three national Proficiency Awards.
Small Animal Production- Tanner Miller, Mulhall-Orlando FFA
Tanner Miller of the Mulhall-Orlando FFA Chapter in Oklahoma decided, after much thought, that he wanted to raise a small breed of dog. He settled on the Pembroke Welsh Corgi bred because of their low-maintenance, overall demeanor and popularity. Miller created facilities that would allow him to breed throughout the entire year and also learned some veterinary skills to save money.
We talked with Tanner backstage after he was presented with his national award. Click on the listen bar below to hear our conversation with him.
