Buyers Should Prepare for Properly Selecting and Buying Bulls
Thu, 15 Dec 2011 09:23:32 CST
Throughout the upcoming months many operations will begin holding annual production bull sales. K-State cow-calf specialist Bob Weaber offers advice to buyers on how to properly select potential herd sires. He recommends that bull buyers do their homework before attending sales that way enough time is allowed to evaluate the actual animals before purchases are made.
Weaber suggests many ways for buyers to evaluate these animals and one of those ways is through getting to know the seedstock vendor. However, Weaber also suggests that when building this relationship, make sure you have your goals and objectives for your herd in mind and clearly communicate those to your seedstock vendor.
Another way Weaber suggests is to identify how to replace animals in your herd. Whether that is retaining them out of your heifer calf crop or other females off the farm, Weaber says it plays a big role in terms of what kind of sires you select in that decision.
