Specialty Crops Demonstration Workshops Slated for Southeast Oklahoma
When some people think about agricultural crops in Oklahoma, wheat is the crop that comes to mind first. However, there are a number of crops that can be grown commercially and do not require hundreds of acres.

Jim Shrefler, area horticulture specialist for the Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension, said some crops are well suited to small scale commercial production, and a pair of upcoming workshops will help provide valuable information to those who are interested in this business.

The workshops will take place April 12 and May 31 at OSU's Wes Watkins Agricultural Research and Extension Center at Lane. The center is located 10 miles east of Atoka on highway 3. Registration is $10 to attend both workshops. To register, contact Shrefler at jim.shrefler@okstate.edu or call 580-513-5544.

"Crops such as vegetables, fruits, herbs and other crops can be grown successfully, but requires knowledge of various aspects common to all farming ventures, including risk management and marketing, proper land management, knowledge of crop production and pest management," Shrefler said. "These two workshops will focus on all of these aspects of specialty crop production."

Because the workshops are designed to provide demonstration and hands-on experience of specialty crop production, dates were selected to allow presenters to address production procedures in a timely fashion.

"We will have a number of industry and Extension specialists on hand to address irrigation, soil management, pest management and food safety," he said.

The workshops are sponsored by OSU Cooperative Extension, USDA Risk Management Agency and the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.
