Rainfall Totals for This Week Across Oklahoma- The Latest Map from the Mesonet
Thu, 31 May 2012 05:35:10 CDT
Rainfall this week across Oklahoma has had two companions that most farmers would prefer not show up- high winds and hail. For farmers trying to harvest the last of the winter canola or their winter wheat crop- a combination of wind and hail is not what the doctor ordered.
The rain, wind and hail of Tuesday evening and early Wednesday in places like Kingfisher actually came in an area where close to 90% of the wheat crop was already harvested, so that mitigated some of the damage of that storm.
Reports of high wind and more hail on Wednesday evening and early Thursday in north central Oklahoma may have caused more problems, as a higher percentage of the wheat crop is yet to be harvested in Garfield, Grant and Alfalfa counties.
The graphic above is of the storm systems that pounded the state this week- and which left out much of west central and southwest Oklahoma. Those areas are getting drier by the day and need a good soaking as prepare to turn the calendar from May to June.
We will get a fresh reading of how dry those locations are in the latest Drought Monitor update to be issued later this morning- the Panhandle and other western counties are almost certainly going to be pushed into a drier to drought category in this final report for May.
