Oklahoma Corn Crop in Pictures- 2011 Versus 2012
Thu, 31 May 2012 14:14:34 CDT
Oklahoma crop conditions are remarkably different as we end May and begin June- and the pictures here are worth several thousand words on the subject. The picture above is from around the first of July, 2011 and shows a burned up corn field near Pauls Valley. That corn field, like so many in 2011, was a failure as drought and extreme heat never allowed the 2011 dryland corn crop in Oklahoma to have much if any chance.
Contrast the picture above with a corn field this last week of May, 2012 near Pauls Valley. This picture comes from Brent Thompson with Farm Credit of Eastern Oklahoma- and he says of the two fields- "What a difference a year makes! We have some corn that is pushing 8 feet tall." He adds that yes, those things at the top of those corn plants are tassles.
The most recent crop weather update for Oklahoma showed the corn crop statewide as being in 6% excellent condition, 74% good and 20% fair. The final report of 2011 saw the Oklahoma corn crop of a year ago hanging on with 8% called excellent, 60% good, 25% fair and 7% poor to very poor. By the time this dried up and ready to die corn photo was taken at the first of July, the corn crop ratings had fallen to 2% excellent, 40% good, 41% fair and 17% poor to very poor. The state ended up producing virtually no dryland corn in 2011- and smaller amounts of irrigated corn as well with the extreme heat hurting the yield potential of those fields as well.
As Brent says- What a difference a year makes!!!
