Canadian County Canola Harvest Comes to Profitable Conclusion
Mon, 21 May 2012 19:08:09 CDT
Canola harvest is starting to wind down across the state and Canadian County Ag Extension Educator Brad Tipton reports to us via email:
"This year Bornemann Farms recorded the best production agriculture winter canola yield we have ever had in Canadian County. Ray had a 120-acre canola field produce over 46 bushel per acre (2,314 lbs/ac).
"Also, I have attached pictures of Jerry Lingo cutting over 40 bushels of canola per acre (2,010 lbs/ac). In the field where these images were taken, Jerry indicated, 'When one considers the price of canola vs. wheat, the gross and net income we made from this year's canola crop is basically the equivalent of producing 75 bushels of wheat.'
"Canadian County canola harvest has come to a successful and very profitable conclusion. The only regret canola growers have is wishing they would have planted more acres of winter canola last fall!"
Tipton also reports that wheat harvest is also progressing in his county:
"Wheat harvest did get underway in Canadian County last Wednesday afternoon and had a three day run until rain began falling in the county around 11:00 Saturday night. Wheat yields producers have been reporting via a random phone survey are running from 35 bushel/acre to 55 bushel/acre with most saying something in the 40 to 50 bushel per acre range. Test weights have been coming in between 58 and 61 lbs/bushel with more reports closer to the 59 to 60 lbs/bushel range.
"With over an inch of rain in parts of the county, we likely won't see much wheat harvesting activity until Tuesday."
