Wheatwatch 2012: Harvest Stuck on 73 Percent by Widespread Rains
Thu, 07 Jun 2012 15:22:02 CDT
Mike Schulte of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission provided the following updates on wheat harvest:
June 7th
Rains throughout the state have continued to hinder the progress of the 2012 wheat harvest. Areas left to cut from south central to Northern Oklahoma, with the majority of the wheat being left to harvest in North Central Oklahoma have had a difficult time starting with the high humidity and high moisture levels, this past week. As of today the rains this past week in all areas have slowed harvest. The latest USDA estimate as of last Sunday was that 73 percent of the Oklahoma crop was harvested. The Oklahoma Wheat Commission thinks this number is correct and has not changed much because of the weather conditions making it difficult for harvest this past week.
In the Panhandle region of the state, moisture this past weekend and during the week have also hindered harvest progress on the dry-land wheat in Texas and Cimarron counties. Harvest for the eastern half of the Panhandle is around 60 percent complete with high test weights and good yields being reported around the Balko area. High humidity levels have also slowed wheat harvest progress in the Panhandle region. The western part of the Panhandle regions would be approximately 20 percent complete with harvest.
The irrigated wheat in this region continues to look favorable and is predicted to be about 8-10 days away from harvest.

Spotty rains around the state have slowed some combines over the weekend, but most areas are out and running this afternoon. Southwest Oklahoma has a few producers that cut their own wheat still in the field, but most in this area should be thru by mid week.
Pond Creek, Farmers Grain Company, is reporting over 6M bushels taken in at their 14 locations. They predict to be 65% complete today and will be close to 100% complete by this weekend. Test weights are ranging from 58 - 64 and yield are in the mid 40's.
Alva estimates to be 80% complete and are reporting a great crop with very few test weights below 60 and yields averaging 40 - 45 bushels per acre. Boise City Farmers Coop was actually taking in their very first load when we called this afternoon. We will have more information from them later this week.
Hooker Equity Exchange is reporting wheat in "excellent condition" for the dryland crop. Test weights are averaging 59 pounds and yields are averaging around 20 bushels per acre on the dryland wheat. Proteins have been averaging 12.5 - 13. Some samples of irrigated wheat have been brought in and the test weights are anywhere from 60 - 63 pounds. They predict that harvest of the irrigated wheat will start this weekend.
