Gustafson Named New Head of OSU Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
John Eric Gustafson has been named the new head of Oklahoma State University's department of biochemistry and molecular biology.

"Dr. Gustafson's addition to our administrative team provides the division with the wealth of experience and demonstrated success necessary to managing our cutting-edge biochemistry and molecular biology programs," said Robert E. Whitson, vice president, dean and director of the OSU Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.

As department head, Gustafson will provide leadership for planning, developing, integrating and implementing departmental teaching, research, extension and international programs; diversity efforts of the department in recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty, staff and students; and the pursuit of competitive grants, research contracts, gifts and other special funding to include endowments for scholarships, fellowships, chairs and professorships.

Gustafson will assume his duties with OSU beginning July 9.

Currently head of the department of biology at New Mexico State University, Gustafson joined the NMSU faculty in 2002. He served as director of the NMSU graduate program in molecular biology from 2006 to 2008.

In addition to his academic and research responsibilities, Gustafson has been engaged as an expert consultant by industry, among them Applied Research Associates, Battelle Memorial Institute, Sega Corp., Sandia Laboratories, Genetica Biotechnologies and Leo Pharmaceuticals.

His professional affiliations include the American Society for Microbiology and core membership in The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease "Network on Antimicrobial Resistance in Staphylococcus aureus." He is a past member of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions.

Prior to joining NMSU, Gustafson served as first a lecturer and then senior lecturer at the School of Biomedical Studies in Australia's Curtin University of Technology from 1996 to 2000. He was an assistant professor with the department of microbiology at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine from 2000 to 2002.

Gustafson earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology with a minor in chemistry and his Master of Science degree in microbial physiology at Illinois State University in 1987 and 1989, respectively. He earned his doctoral degree in molecular microbiology at the University of Zurich in 1994, which he followed with a postdoctoral fellowship at Tufts University School of Medicine from 1994 to 1996.
