Senators, Congress Members Address Farm Bill Now Rally
Wed, 12 Sep 2012 19:39:34 CDT
Farm groups and lawmakers assembled in front of the Capitol to rally for House passage of the 2012 Farm Bill. Members representing 88 different groups supporting the bill and about a dozen House and Senate members called on the House of Representatives to bring the bill to the floor for passage before the end of September.
Several members of the House and Senate addressed those assembled for the rally. You can hear a selection of their comments by clicking on the LISTEN BAR below this story.
Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan) says if the House allows the current farm bill to expire on September 30th, the consequences will be grave for producers. She says it would be disappointing if Congress allows the current bill to expire. She said that would allow provisions of the 1949 farm bill to take over, causing tremendous difficulties to the agricultural sector.
Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas says the consequences of not passing a comprehensive farm bill now could conceivably shake the country to its foundations. He says the consequences for rural America, especially, are severe and could have an impact for generations to come.
Representative Kristi Noem said the stakes have never been higher for America and for the world. She sees passing a farm bill as a matter of national security.
So far, no floor time has been assigned to the 2012 Farm Bill before the end of September.
