Dust Storm Could Have Been Much Worse Without Conservation Practices, Clay Pope Says
Thu, 18 Oct 2012 17:41:56 CDT
Wind gusts in excess of 50 miles an hour across northern Oklahoma caused a dust storm Thursday afternoon. Near-blackout conditions caused a 30-car pile-up on I-35 near Blackwell.
Clay Pope, executive director of the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts monitored the situation and said it really wasn't a surprise given the drought the state has suffered for the last two years. He said were it not for conservation practices that landowners have been using for decades, incidents such as this would occur with far greater frequency and severity.
He also said that the dust storm and resulting accident should give pause to those who think conservation practices are wasteful and costly.
