House Ag Committee Chair Frank Lucas Wins Big in Reelection Bid
Tue, 06 Nov 2012 21:48:39 CST
The Chairman of the House Ag Committee, Oklahoma Third District Congressman Frank Lucas, has cruised to an easy win for another two years representing the northwestern half of the state of Oklahoma. As of 10:00 PM central, just over 94% of the vote had been counted in his district, with the OSU graduate winning 76% of the popular vote.
In talking with RON Director of Farm Programming Ron Hays, Lucas expressed his happiness with his personal victory, as well as the word that several news networks were on record projecting the US House will stay Republican for another two years, which means Lucas will continue to serve as the Chairman of the House Ag Committee.
Next week, Congress is scheduled to return on November 13 to Washington for the so called "Lame Duck" session- and Lucas says he is hopeful that Republican Leadership Eric Cantor will follow through on comments made on the election trail in recent weeks that the House Ag Committee's version of farm policy will get floor consideration. Lucas continues to promise that he will take any time offered to him to push his bill forward- and that if happens early in the Lame Duck, it would give him a chance to take a House Passed measure to conference with Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan (Who has also won reelection), work out a compromise- and then take it back to both bodies for a final blessing before presenting it to the President to sign. That remains number one on the Frank Lucas wishlist. He did concede that if a five year farm bill is not possible- an extension will be absolutely essential, to forestall negative impacts that would start to hit various segments of agriculture by the first of the new year.
Chairman Lucas adds that he has warned current and possible new members of the House Ag Committee that if a farm bill is not completed this calendar year- markup of a new measure will begin very early in the new Congressional year- no hearings in 2013 will be planned.
