FFA, 4-H Students Vying to Bring Top Animals to Oklahoma Youth Expo

FFA, 4-H Students Vying to Bring Top Animals to Oklahoma Youth Expo
FFA and 4-H students are now competing in livestock shows all across the state in preparation for the upcoming Oklahoma Youth Expo in Oklahoma City. The show runs March 16-26 at the State Fairgrounds.

Tyler Norvell, the executive director of the OYE, visited with Ron Hays on the latest edition of "In the Field," seen every Saturday morning on News 9. Norvell said over 18,000 animals have been nominated for the show and he expects 10,000 of them will participate in the ten-day event.   Click inside the video box below to watch the full interview.

Norvell said the Oklahoma City Visitors Bureau expects 100,000 visitors will come to Oklahoma City for the show, with an economic impact of $24 million dollars.

There are some big changes in scheduling this year, Norvell said, to more adequately accommodate the students, their animals, and the show's visitors.

The show is all about helping young people, Norvell said. To that end, the OYE will present almost $125,000 in scholarships and nearly $750,000 in awards through the premium sale.

"We'll sell the top 215 animals," Norvell said. "The young people have the opportunity to take their project through the ring and get a bonus premium that they'll use to turn around and buy another project, but more importantly, for their college education."

The show will present almost $125,000 in scholarships and nearly $750,000 in premiums.

Major funding for the premium sale is provided by the members of the Sirloin Club of Oklahoma. Their annual banquet and chalice auction will be held January 31st at the Embassy Suites Hotel on South Meridian in Oklahoma City. The Sirloin Club is a group of community leaders who support Oklahoma youth involved in agriculture through the FFA and 4-H.
