A MAtter of the Heart- Jhett Skaggs Benefit Planned for Valentine's Day

Sat, 12 Jan 2013 03:53:00 CST

A MAtter of the Heart- Jhett Skaggs Benefit Planned for Valentine's Day The cattle industry is coming together on Valentine's Day to raise funds for a young man and his family for a second time. The Jhett Skaggs Benefit Auction , which will be held on Valentine's day, Feb. 14th at the Commanche County Fair grounds in Lawton will begin with a dinner at 6:00 PM, followed by the auction at 7:00 PM.

Here are some details behind the auction that is coming February 14 from a brochure courtesy of the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association. "In November of 2007, 11-month-old Jhett Skaggs was blessed with a second chance at a normal life when he underwent a succesfulheart transplant. Five years later, while in Houston for one of his regular checkups, doctors found problems. Jhett has developed Transplant Coronary Artery Disease, and the only cure is another transplant.

"The family has been told to expect to be in Houston for a year or longer. Since Jhett can't be more than an hour from the hospital, Jhett and Brian are currently living in Houston. Audra and big sister, Merritt, who is now eight years old, are staying at home in Lexington so Audra can continue teaching and Merritt can stay in school. Audra and Brian will swap residences on weekends, allowing them each to spend time with both children.

"Both Brian and Audra will continue to work as much as possible, but the unforeseen expenses of everyday life, frequent travel and maintaining two residences will continue for the foreseeable future. A very caring and gracious individual has set up a 501c3 Non-Profit Trust for the Skaggs family. The trust will be managed and administered by an independent, non-related third party. Through this trust, we hope to raise enough funds to cover the added expenses of maintaining two households until they are able to come back home to Oklahoma and live again as a family under one roof.

"Please e-mail information on donated auction items to: acs@americancattleservices.com. We encourage items such as: semen, embryos, planned matings, advertising packages, professional services, sporting event tickets, memorabilia, hunts, trips, art, equipment, etc. for the live auction. Smaller items are greatly appreciated as well. These items will be sold by silent auction held during the event."
