Fresh Ideas for Oklahoma Farm Bureau Being Advocated by New VP for Government Affairs & Media Outreach John Collison

Farmers and Ranchers are gathering from across the United States for the 2013 American Farm Bureau Convention and Trade Show in Nashville, Tennessee. The 2013 theme that is bringing them together at the start of the new year is "Many Voices- One Vision." The President of the American Farm Bureau, Bob Stallman, says that the theme of the 2013 is very appropriate- "American agriculture is more diverse than ever and is working harder to meet consumers' demand for every kind of food choice one can imagine. Here, at our annual meeting, those diverse voices come together to speak for all of agriculture and ensure that we and our nation remain on a path to productivity, profitability and success."
Among the estimated 5,000 convention goers are close to a hundred Oklahomans- and many of them gathered for an Oklahoma reception on Saturday evening in advance to the official kickoff of the meeting on Sunday morning. They were greeted by Oklahoma Farm Bureau President Mike Spradling of Tulsa County, and Executive Director of the OFB, Monica Wilkie. At the end of the reception time- the official delegates who will represent Oklahoma in the resolutions session starting Tuesday morning met with the new Vice President for Government Affairs for the organization, John Collison. Collison is the new man on staff at the Oklahoma Farm Bureau- but he's a familiar face serving for several years as the State Director for Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe.
We talked with Collison after he and the delegates put their heads together for a few minutes- and you can hear our conversation by clicking on the LISTEN BAR below. We talked with Collison about key issues that Oklahoma will be paying a lot of attention to during the delegate session, as well as his desire to see many more Oklahoma Farm Bureau members involved in social media efforts across the state- and the goal of involving many more younger farmers and ranchers in the general farm organization. On that last point- Collison tells us "We're trying to get younger by getting our message out there and making the Farm Bureau a fun place to be and a place where everyone feels welcome to come and help out at."
