Mon, 04 Feb 2013 10:56:23 CST
Oklahoma State University's Robert M. Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center, together with the Institute of Food Technologists-Oklahoma section, are sponsoring the 13th annual FAPC Research Symposium to highlight food and agricultural products research conducted by the center and other OSU researchers.
The symposium will be held Feb. 19 in room 201 of the FAPC from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature oral and poster presentations and a keynote speaker.
"The event will provide an opportunity for graduate students to make presentations of their work and for researchers to network with others in the food and agricultural field and possibly foster future collaborations among colleagues," said Peter Muriana, FAPC food microbiologist and chair of the symposium.
The keynote speaker, Janet Collins, IFT president-elect and senior manager for DuPont Corporate Regulatory Affairs, will discuss the "Impact of Science on Development of Global Food Standards."
"We are fortunate to have Dr. Collins as our keynote speaker," Muriana said. "This makes the second year in a row that FAPC was able to recruit the IFT leadership in speaking at the research symposium, which is not an easy task. Dr. Collins is very knowledgeable in food policy and regulatory affairs and is very involved in advocacy roles for food industry coalitions."
Collins is a food scientist and nutritionist, with advocacy and policy development experience relating to food safety assessment, risk analysis, food labeling and health claims, nutritional contribution of foods and dietary exposure assessment, agricultural biotechnology issues, and regulatory and scientific affairs functions of meat and dairy trade associations.
"We are excited to have Dr. Collins talk on important industry related topics," said Chuck Willoughby, FAPC business and marketing relations manager. "Global food standards play a key role in the industry, and that is something we assist clients with here at the FAPC."
Following lunch, student awards will be presented in both the oral and poster presentation categories. The top student winners of each category will receive a monetary award from IFT-Oklahoma section.
The symposium is open to the public. There is no charge for the day's events; however, registration is required to receive a complimentary lunch ticket.
The registration deadline for the symposium is Feb. 8. You may register online at www.fapc.biz/workshops/researchsymposium2013/researchsymposium or call Karen Smith, FAPC workshop coordinator, at (405) 744-6277.
