Legislative Showmanship Contest at OYE Won by Mike Jackson of EnidWed, 20 Mar 2013 05:06:14 CDT
The 8th annual Legislative Showmanship Contest was held Tuesday evening at the Jim Norrick Rodeo Arena as a part of the Oklahoma Youth Expo. Matching up lawmkers with 4-H or FFA members- many from their home districts- has proven to be one of the highlights of this statewide livestock show.
For the first time, lawmakers and major sponsors were able to try their hand at showing all four species as they worked with the young owner of the animal- as the 2013 schedule allowed goats to be added to the event. About 70 lawmakers showed up to rub elbows with the young people. State Representative Mike Jackson of Enid came away as the overall showmanship winner, earning the right to have his name added to the Robert Kerr Traveling Trophy that was presented to him Tuesday evening.
Emceeing the event again in 2013 was State Representative Don Armes, who talked with Farm Director Ron Hays briefly as the event wound down- he called it a great way to allow the legislators and the young who actually are showing animals at the Youth Expo to interact. Armes says that it is a great reminder to rural and urban members of the State Legislature how important this educational event is- and why it is a great investment for both the public as well as the private dollars that are dedicated to the show annually.
