AFR Awards Scholarships to Oklahoma Youth
Fifteen scholarship recipients were recognized at the American Farmers & Ranchers/Oklahoma Farmers Union (AFR/OFU) 108th State Convention Feb. 23. Each year, AFR/OFU awards the AFR Incoming Freshman State Scholarship and the AFR Continuing Education to deserving youth across the state. Each scholarship recipient received a $750 scholarship.

"As an organization, we are committed to the future of the agricultural industry in Oklahoma," said AFR President Terry Detrick. "We are proud to provide not only opportunities for growth and personal development, but also financial support for tomorrow's industry leaders."

This year's recipients of the AFR Incoming Freshman Scholarship are Micaela Danker, Wellston; Annie Jo Gilbert, Tecumseh; Barrett Powell, Ringwood; Dyson Runyan, Madill; Haley Travis, Marlow; and Kelsie Williams, Hollis.

Recipients of the AFR Continuing Education Scholarship are Jamie Baumgardner, Enid; Jarrett Davis, Sterling; Morgan Hannabass, Indiahoma; Karli Hostetler, Billings; Darcey Kliewer, Thomas; Bailey Kliewer, Thomas; Kayla Smith, Haworth; Lindsey Underwood, Tecumseh; and Bradley Womack, Morris.

Scholarship applications are selected by the AFR Scholarship Committee based on knowledge of the organization, AFR involvement, leadership activities, scholastic achievement and financial need. To be eligible for either scholarship, applications must have attended a minimum of two years of the AFR Senior Leadership Summit. They must also have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and must be an AFR policyholder.

AFR's annual state scholarships are available to qualified students in all 77 Oklahoma counties. Students are eligible to apply for the AFR Incoming Freshman State Scholarship during their senior year of high school. Students may then apply for the AFR Continuing Education State Scholarship throughout their undergraduate career. Both previous and first-time applications are eligible for the AFR Continuing Education Scholarship.

Scholarship recipients are announced June of each year and are recognized the following February during the annual AFR/OFU convention. This year's application deadline is April 15. For more information on AFR scholarship opportunities or other AFR Youth Program projects, contact AFR Youth & Education Coordinator Lin Fariss at (405)218-5561 or lfariss@afrmic.com.
