2013 Star in Agribusiness- Chance Imhoff of Prague FFA

Chance Imhoff of the Prague FFA has been selected as the 2013 Oklahoma FFA Star in Agribusiness at the 87th annual convention of the organization.

Prague FFA member Chance Imhoff used his knowledge of the goat industry, his background in agriculture and his drive for success in the show ring to build his business.

From the beginning of his show career to the creation of Chance's Clipping LLC, Imhoff's passion and dedication to the for the goat industry led to his selection as the 2013 State Star in Agribusiness recipient.

The State Star in Agribusiness is one of the highest honors given by Oklahoma FFA. Imhoff's supervised agricultural experience was rated the best agribusiness project among the 715 FFA members who received the State FFA Degree during the 87th annual State FFA Convention on May 1. In addition to this honor, Imhoff received the Governor's Trophy and a $2,000 cash award sponsored by Blue & Gold Sausage Co. of Jones, Okla.

Imhoff spoke with Radio Oklahoma Network Farm Director Ron Hays about the path he traveled to start his unique enterprise. (You can listen to their full conversation by clicking on the LISTEN BAR at the bottom of this story.)

"I'm a fifth-generation farmer so I was born and raised on a farm. And having older siblings in the FFA program showing cattle, that's initially what people would assume I would show."

Imhoff threw his family a curve and selected to show goats. He said in a family steeped in raising show calves, he learned his craft mostly by trial and error. He said his experience with going against the grain and learning everything about showing goats from the ground up led him to a unique agribusiness.

When an acquaintance asked him via email for some pointers on clipping goats, Imhoff said the nucleus of his business was born. He decided to create a video on how to show goats and tested its viability on Facebook. The encouraging response was enough to launch his business. And sales have been brisk.

"Currently, we've been operating for a year and a half and I've sold over 250 copies to 34 states in the United States and I've sold one to Canada. So, I like to tell people I have one continent, two countries and 34 states where our business has gone."

The 19-year-old Prague FFA member is the son of Charles and Bonnie Imhoff. His agricultural education instructors and FFA advisers are Wendy Slusher-Rich and Tanner Thompson.

Imhoff credits much of the success of his business to what he learned through FFA and agricultural education.

"FFA has taught me so much more than I can ever explain in one interview," Imhoff sad.
