WheatWatch 2013- Oklahoma Wheat Harvest Drawing to a Close
Mike Schulte, executive director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, files his final report on harvest progress for the 2013 crop year:

Most of wheat harvest in Oklahoma for the 2013 crop year is now complete, with harvest still taking place in the areas of north central, Northeast and Panhandle regions. In parts of the state the harvest was far better than anticipated two months ago. Most producers will agree that this harvest season will certainly be one for the record books with regards to the severe drought, late freezes, cooler temperatures and the unusually late gathering of the crop. On June 30th USDA reported Oklahoma to be 84 percent complete with harvest. As of today the Oklahoma Wheat commission reports harvest for our state to be approximately 93 percent complete, with hopes the remaining 7 percent left will be finished over the 4th of July Holiday.

Kingfisher and Enid areas- Harvest in these regions is 99 percent complete with a few people still cutting North and Northeast of Enid. Test weights ranging from 57 to 59 pounds. Yields in these areas ranging from 25 bushels an acre to 45 bushels per acre. Some reports of wheat around Enid on real good fields making in the 60's. Protein has been reported to be around 11.5 to 12.2 in this region overall. Test weights would have been much better in this region if they could have got the crop out before the late rains.

Ponca City- This area of the state is still in the thick of harvest with approximately 75 to 80 percent of the crop is harvested in this region. Yield reports in this region are averaging anywhere from 35 to 45 bushels per acre on most fields. Test weights in this region averaging 57 to 59 pounds per bushel.

Alva and Burlington areas- Harvest in these regions is pretty much complete, the harvest in this area ended up doing better than what was expected. Test weights in the region were all over the board. The further North and West the test weights and yields were much lower.   Some reports of yields around Cherokee and east of Alva to be making anywhere from the mid 30's to high 40's. In these areas test weights were around the 56 to 59 pounds per bushel. Some reports where the extreme drought took place in this region showed test weights to be averaging 53 pounds per bushel. Protein reports from this region averaging around 12.5 to 14.5 percent.

Panhandle Region- It is estimated that what will be harvested in the Panhandle region of Oklahoma is now 75 to 80 percent complete. The dry-land wheat that was harvested in this region did not do well because of the significant drought and late freezes. Reports on dry-land wheat in Beaver, Texas and Cimarron counties to be making anywhere from 0 to 18 bushels per acre. Test weights extremely low in the dry-land wheat. The irrigated wheat is doing much better with yields on irrigated wheat ranging anywhere from 24 to 60 bushels per acre depending on the variety. Proteins are coming in lower and currently are averaging around 15 to 16 percent. Proteins during this harvest have been reported to be making as high as 19 percent.
