OSU Deer Field Day SlatedAug. 15 in Stillwater

More deer equals more meat. For those Oklahomans who enjoy a plethora of venison in the freezer, proper management is key.
"Deer management is much more involved than just planting food plots or using feeders," said Dwayne Elmore, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension wildlife specialist. "A lot of people have misconceptions on what food plots can and can't do. Their primary function is a harvest efficiency tool."
To help clear up some of these misconceptions, OSU Cooperative Extension and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation are teaming up to host the OSU Deer Field Day, Aug. 15 at 5:30 p.m.
Topics to be discussed are timber stand improvement, deer surveys, browse surveys, food plot management and identification of important forage plants.
"This is for anyone interested in deer management, including hunters and landowners," Elmore said. "It will help them better manage habitat and deer populations."
The free field day will take place at the OSU Range Research Station, located west of Stillwater on S. Coyle Road, 2.5 miles south of highway 51. Those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP by Aug. 12 by contacting Elmore at 405-744-9636, or by email at Dwayne.elmore@okstate.edu.
