Hunter Westfahl of Okeene FFA Wins Grand Champion Honors at State Wheat Show

Hunter WestFahl, son of Ron and Tracy WestFahl, was recently awarded the overall grand champion award showing his Billings variety in the 2013 Oklahoma 4-H/FFA Junior Wheat Show. WestFahl placed 1st in production and visual and 1st in milling and baking, earning him the title of 1st place among the FFA, FFA champion, and overall grand champion of the 4-H and FFA Junior Wheat Show. Damon Fisher, son of Kevin and Lesley Fisher, recently placed 1st overall in the 4-H division while showing his Duster variety at the 2013 Oklahoma 4-H/FFA Junior Wheat Show.
Fisher placed 6th in production and visual, 1st in milling and baking, combined earning him the title of 1st place among the 4-H, 4-H champion overall and reserve grand champion winner. Fisher is a member of the Lomega 4-H club. WestFahl and Fisher recently accepted their awards at a recognition banquet held at the Oklahoma State University Alumni Center on Thursday evening, September 5th.
WestFahl, received $3,000 in scholarship money for his accomplishments along with an extra $250 premium for being grand champion. Oklahoma Genetics Incorporated (OGI) presented a $500 premium on top of those awards to WestFahl for winning first place overall in the FFA competition with the Billings variety since it was an OGI release. WestBred also donated a $250 scholarship to WestFahl for being the grand champion winner.
Fisher received $3,000 in scholarship money for his accomplishments along with also getting a $500 premium from OGI for winning first place overall in the 4-H competition with the popular Duster variety which is also an OGI release. WestBred also donated a $250 scholarship to Fisher for being the reserve grand champion winner. In all, over $16,000 in scholarship money was given away at the 2013 Oklahoma Junior Wheat Show banquet.
The Executive Director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, Mike Schulte, reminds all 4-H and FFA members across the state that any member can compete for the top prizes in the 2014 contest- but the time is now to be making your variety selections to plant for 2014 harvest, which then can be entered in next summer's competition.
The Oklahoma Wheat Commission works to promote greater utilization of wheat in both domestic and international markets through research, market development, and public education. Five wheat producers representing designated districts across the state serve as the Oklahoma Wheat Commission's board of directors. Current officers are David Gammill, Chairman, Chattanooga; Don Schieber, Vice Chairman, Ponca City; Kenneth Failes, Secretary-Treasurer, Cherokee; Tom Stephens, member, Guymon; and Michael Peters, member, Okarche.
