Oklahoma City Pray for Rain Event Scheduled for September 18th
Mon, 16 Sep 2013 11:07:36 CDT
Oklahoma City-A summer long call for prayer for rain and water stewardship will come to a conclusion with a service at 6:00 pm on September 18 at Saint Paul's Cathedral in downtown Oklahoma City. Leaders from local churches and other faith groups as well as Oklahoma's Conservation Districts will come together to give thanks for the recent summer rains in central and eastern Oklahoma while remembering those still in drought in the Oklahoma Panhandle and the far western portions of our state. According to Clay Pope, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts (OACD), the service on the 18th will focus not solely on rain, but also on the stewardship of our water resources.
"Those of us who live east of communities like Woodward and Altus have been blessed this summer with relief from the drought," Pope said. "Unfortunately, our fellow Oklahoman's who live in the far west portions of our state have not seen the level of rainfall we have. It's easy to forget that not all of the state is out of the drought and it's also easy to forget the challenges we all faced earlier this spring when the entire state was so dry. Now is the time that we should come together to pray not just for the whole state to have relief from the drought but also for all of us to remember how important it is that we care for the water we have."
Pope said that the Oklahoma City event on September 18 at St. Paul's will be the conclusion of a series of events sponsored by OACD, the Oklahoma Conference of Churches and the Whole Creation Community, a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma. According to the Rev. Dr. William Tabbernee, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Conference of Churches, the group is hopeful that these events have helped encourage all Oklahoman's to be good stewards of our water while recognizing what a precious gift it is.
"Water is indeed life," Rev. Tabbernee said. "We are charged to be good stewards of this important natural resource whether in abundance or in drought. We sincerely hope that these efforts encouraging Oklahoman's to pray for rain and water have helped to remind of us how important that call to stewardship is."
