Deer Management Workshop Scheduled in Norman

Deer Management Workshop Scheduled in Norman
Summer is winding down, which means Oklahoma hunters are heating up for deer season.

"Many are excited for cooler weather, holidays and of course football," said Heath Herje, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Cleveland County educator. "Many others are preparing for the most popular hunting season in Oklahoma; deer season."

With archery season in Oklahoma beginning Oct. 1, hunters are already placing their trail cameras and have planted food plots. Several local, state and federal agencies are continuously putting out research-based data on deer and deer management tactics.

To provide the latest information on land and deer herd management, OSU Cooperative Extension and The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation are co-hosting a statewide deer management workshop in Norman at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds' Frye Auditorium Sept. 19.

Registration is $15 and begins at 9:30 a.m. The cost includes lunch, and participants also can choose to register and receive a book on managing for deer in the Cross Timbers region for $35.

"Hunters and deer managers will learn the latest on deer behavior, nutrition, land management, biology and how to better manage the state's number one game species," Herje said. "The afternoon session will include a wildlife plant ID walk through Sutton Wilderness where you will learn about what plants are beneficial to wildlife."

Officials will be on hand from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation to discuss their Deer Management Assistance Program and the Quality Deer Management Association will provide membership information and free magazines.
