Oklahoma 4-H Clubs Collect Donations for Ronald McDonald House
Oklahoma 4-H members are starting the new year off with a bang by raising money for the 2014 Oklahoma 4-H Kids Helping Kids Campaign. While the campaign is a fundraiser for local 4-H clubs across the state, it also is a community service project for the Ronald McDonald House Charities located in Oklahoma City, a non-profit that provides "a home away from home" for families with seriously ill or injured children who are being treated in the Oklahoma City area.

"The Kids Helping Kids campaign is the longest running service project/fundraiser in Oklahoma 4-H history," said Suzanne Simpson, state 4-H marketing coordinator at Oklahoma State University. "This project isn't just another fundraiser for a youth organization; it's a way for all of us to help a truly amazing charity, the Ronald McDonald House. With a simple donation, you can help families facing crises worse than anything most of us could imagine. Over the years, Oklahoma 4-H'ers have raised more than $415,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities."

Beginning Jan. 20 and lasting through the end of March, Oklahoma 4-H'ers will be pounding the pavement asking friends, neighbors, local businesses and caring strangers for $1 donations in exchange for a coupon to participating McDonald's restaurants in Oklahoma.

Of the funds raised, one third will remain in each county's 4-H program, one sixth will be given to the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation, and one half will go to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oklahoma City. The funds given to the House will help finance their day-to-day expenses and will finance a portion of the current house improvements, including work on a facility in The Children's Hospital of Oklahoma City.

"Since the Ronald McDonald House opened their doors in Oklahoma City in 1984, they have housed more than 15,000 families," Simpson said. "In 2012 alone, they helped more than 945 families from all over Oklahoma, 10 other states and even England and Paraguay. With its welcoming environment, comfortable lodging, daily meals and laundry facilities, the House is uniquely able to relieve some of the burdens and stress families face during difficult times. Please help the House continue their great work and support our amazing 4-H'ers in the process. Locate a local 4-H member today to donate now"

For more information about this campaign, contact your county's OSU Cooperative Extension office or visit the Oklahoma 4-H website at http://oklahoma4h.okstate.edu/events/khk.htm.
