NCBA's Kristina Butts Believes WTO Ruling on COOl to be Made Public in September
Fri, 01 Aug 2014 06:18:43 CDT
Friday's Beef Buzz features comments from Kristina Butts with the National Cattlemen's Beef Association's office in Washington. Butts talks with Farm Director Ron Hays at the Summer Cattle Industry Conference in Denver about the continuing saga of mandatory Country of Origin labeling.
She indicates that the US government may be forced to deal with COOL later this year, as she anticipates that the WTO will likely rule against the revised rule put in place by the US Department of Agriculture here in the US last May, that requires even more information than the first rule that was developed from the 2008 Farm Law- that has already been ruled in violation of trade rules by the WTO.
Butts expects a ruling to be made public by WTO in September.
She adds that USDA may have little wiggle room on this issue- and that it may take legislative action to fix this problem that is causing problems with two of our largest beef trading partners, Mexico and Canada.
The Beef Buzz is a regular feature heard on radio stations around the region on the Radio Oklahoma Network- but is also a regular audio feature found on this website as well.
