AFR/OFU Promotes Creativity in Oklahoma Youth
Wed, 18 Feb 2015 11:23:07 CST
American Farmers & Ranchers/Oklahoma Farmers Union (AFR/OFU) hosted the organization's annual poster contest earlier this year. More than 2,000 students statewide competed in the contest. AFR/OFU recognized the contest winners at the organization's 110th state convention in Norman Feb. 13.
Each year, the AFR/OFU Youth Program captures the creativity of students across the state through the poster contest. Through agriculture-based themes, the contest allows educators to promote agriculture and to introduce aspects of the industry to students and parents alike. This year's theme was "I Believe in Oklahoma Agriculture." Students were encouraged to illustrate what agriculture meant to them or why they believed in agriculture in Oklahoma.
"We are proud to sponsor a contest that not only educates, but also encourages creativity among our state's young people," said AFR/OFU President Terry Detrick. "Agriculture is important to Oklahoma for many reasons, and we are pleased to provide an opportunity for families to learn about it.
"It is exciting to think more than 2,000 young people sat at their family's kitchen table and illustrated their vision and understanding of Oklahoma agriculture and where their food comes from."
The contest consists of two age divisions Division I for students in grades 1-2 and Division II for students in grades 3-4. The top five posters in each division received cash awards. AFR/OFU recognized these top five winners at the organization's convention.
Division I winners were Betzabhel Ramos, Lindbergh Elementary in Tulsa, first place; Annelise Dyke, Walters Elementary in Walters, second place; Lauren Brown, Marietta Schools in Marietta, third place; Brayden George, Marietta Schools in Marietta, fourth place; and Raegan Roberts, Valliant Elementary in Valliant, fifth place.
Division II winners were Esperanza Ramos, Lindbergh Elementary in Tulsa, first place; Kaleigh Feathers, Marietta Schools, Marietta, second place; Grace Price, Marietta Schools in Marietta, third place; Mason O'Neal, Marietta Schools in Marietta, fourth place; and Cainan Mink, Marietta Schools in Marietta, fifth place.
The poster contest is just one of several AFR/OFU Youth Program traditions. In addition, the organization also offers a speech contest series, a summer youth leadership summit, statewide scholarships, livestock handling and skills contests, livestock judging and grading competitions and many other leadership opportunities.
