American Agri-Women Aim to Connect with Congressional Leaders and Consumers

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 16:48:01 CDT

American Agri-Women Aim to Connect with Congressional Leaders and Consumers Women involved in agriculture are gathering this weekend in Oklahoma City. The newly reorganized Oklahoma Agri-Women Chapter is hosting women from across the nation involved in their national organization. Members of the American Agri-Women will be developing policy while building relationships with other women involved growing food, fuel and fiber.

"This year's legislative discussions take on an even greater meaning since we are celebrating our 40th anniversary," says AAW President Sue McCrum. "Our members take the discussions very seriously, knowing we are representing more than 50 state and commodity affiliates when we craft our final positions."

Those policy positions will be delivered to elected officials in June during the organization's annual Fly-In to Washington, D.C. McCrum said among their top priorities include private property rights.

McCrum is from northern Maine where her family grows potatoes and small grains. She and her husband have been farming for 44 years. Today her sons and nephews become the fifth generation involved in the family farm.

Being involved in the American Agri-Women fosters relationships while finding common ground across agriculture. Oklahoma Agri-Women President Kristi Bishop said those involved in agriculture face different challenges. Further, she said the women involved in the organization share a passion for educating consumers about where their food comes from and America's role in feeding a growing population.

Radio Oklahoma Network Farm Director Ron Hays interviewed McCrum and Bishop. Click or tap on the LISTENBAR below to listen to the full interview. McCrum and Bishop will also be joining Ron for his weekly In the Field report on KWTV News9 in the Oklahoma City market on Saturday morning at 6:40 AM.

AAW is the nation's largest coalition of farm, ranch and agri-business women. The organization is celebrating 40 years of advocating for agriculture and empowering women in agriculture.
