Oklahoma Hog Seller Retires After 43 Years
Thu, 25 Jun 2015 09:57:44 CDT
Rex Austin retired after 43 years of buying and selling hogs in Stockyards City located just west of downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He has worked there since the historic business held its first hog auction. He rents pens at the stockyards to hold hogs until he acquires a load and then sells them to larger meatpacking plants across the United States. Austin's retirement will create a noticeable vacancy in the hog buying market for family farms.
Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture Jim Reese took note of the occasion by presenting a commendation to Austin. The commendation, signed by Gov. Mary Fallin, thanked Austin for helping feed the state and nation through selling hogs. It read in part "I would like to thank you for your continued service and support of Oklahoma agriculture by purchasing hogs from locally owned farming operations in the state."
"Rex's retirement does indeed create a void for private hog sellers in Oklahoma and neighboring states," Reese said. "It is certainly my hope someone in the livestock marketing industry, and hopefully someone in the Oklahoma livestock marketing industry, will fill the niche that Rex filled these 43 years."
