Ripley 4-H Member Wins Top Honors at World Pork Expo

Kelton Arthur, age 7, of the Ripley 4-H Club recently took home top honors at the World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa. Kelton showed his Berkshire gilt to Champion Berkshire female and was also selected as the Reserve Champion Overall Purebred Gilt at the World Pork Expo Junior National Show.
Kelton Arthur traveled to Des Moines the week of June 1st to compete with over 750 other exhibitors from 24 different states. Entries for this 2015 Junior National show were up 33 percent from the previous year with over 3,500 hogs on site competing for national titles. Arthur first had to win his class before being considered for the overall breed champion honors. When he was selected as the Breed Champion Berkshire Gilt he then was eligible to show against other breed champions to be in contention for the Overall Purebred Gilt honors. Arthur was selected as the Reserve Champion Overall Team Purebred Gilt of the World Expo Junior National Show 2015.
While attending the World Pork Expo Junior National Show, Arthur participated in the showmanship contest, skillathon contest focused on overall swine knowledge, judging contest and the junior show. Exhibitors compete in these events to be considered for the all-around sweepstakes award at the end of the show. Arthur was named 9th Overall Novice Sweepstakes Exhibitor.
Kelton Arthur has exhibited hogs at the World Pork Expo for four years and looks forward to showing there in the future.
"This is the best that I have ever done with one of my pigs and I was very excited when the judge picked me", Arthur said of being selected Reserve Champion Overall Purebred Gilt.
Arthur has plans to show his gilt, "Pineapple" later on in June at the National Junior Show in Springfield, Illinois. He attributes his success to help from all of his family and lots of friends at the show and at home.
