Oklahoma Wheat Harvest Mostly at a Standstill- But Farmers Trying to Restart As Fields Dry

Tue, 16 Jun 2015 05:37:36 CDT

Oklahoma Wheat Harvest Mostly at a Standstill- But Farmers Trying to Restart As Fields Dry Limited harvest on sandier soil in central Oklahoma was reported on Monday afternoon in the latest Oklahoma Wheat Commission Harvest Report. Here is the report submitted by Executive Director Mike Schulte:

"The Oklahoma Wheat Harvest continues to be at a standstill through all regions of the state. Producers in some areas thought they might try harvesting today around the Medford area, but it will all depend on if moisture levels get low enough and no rains come later this afternoon or this evening. Some wheat was harvested over the weekend in the Greenfield area on sandier soils with approximately 9,000 bushels collected in that area yesterday. As of this afternoon, some samples were brought into the Greenfield location but tested 19% moisture so most likely no wheat will be harvested in that region today. (Greenfield is located in Blaine County)

"Regions in parts of South Central Oklahoma received over 5 inches of rain over the weekend with more falling today and flash flooding. Some places in the far Southwest region of the state received over 10 inches of rain over the weekend. Approximately 95% of the wheat on the Oklahoma/Texas border has been harvested. In other parts of South Oklahoma harvest is 70% to 75% complete. In parts of Central Oklahoma around Clinton, Hydro, Greenfield and Watonga approximately 20% to 25% of the crop is harvested. In parts of North Central and Northwest Oklahoma it is estimated 5% of the crop is harvested, with most combines parked since late Thursday evening.

"No wheat has been reported being harvested in the Panhandle region. If it dries out producers are thinking in some areas they might start on Wednesday harvesting the dryland wheat.

"Greenfield- Some lower test weights in this area have been reported with an average of 58 lbs. to 59 lbs. per bushel being reported. We have had some higher test weights also reported to be making 60 lbs. to 62 lbs. per bushel in this region. No yields or proteins have been reported from this area. Some minor sprout damage has been reported in this area on wheat taken in ranging from 3% to 5% on some loads.

"Medford- No yields have been reported in this region of Grant County but on the wheat harvested before Friday morning they were seeing test weights range from 58 lbs. to 62 lbs. per bushel with most of the wheat falling in the 60 lb. to 62 lb. range. No yields or proteins have been reported from this region as harvest was just getting started before the rains this weekend. "
