The Oklahoma Water Resources Center, Oklahoma State University's Department of Agricultural Communications and several OSU Extension specialists were honored at the 2015 Annual International Meeting of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers in New Orleans July 26-29.
The Water Center won a 2015 ASABE Educational Aids Blue Ribbon Award in the Electronic Delivery category for its Foundations of Oklahoma Water video series.
"The Blue Ribbon Awards have been presented since 2003 to promote excellence in informational materials," said Garey Fox, OWRC director.
The ASABE presented the Blue Ribbon Certificate to the Water Center and other winners at the meeting, as well as recognized them in print.
According to the ASABE website, "The Educational Aids Blue Ribbon Awards Competition promotes excellence in informational materials which contribute to the understanding of agricultural and biological engineering subjects outside of the traditionalclassroom setting."
Foundations of Oklahoma Water is a new video series produced by the Water Center to educate and inform Extension educators, the general public and students on various timely water topics, as well as the many services offered by OSU and the OWRC.
"The Oklahoma Water Resources Center is proud of the Foundations of Oklahoma Water video series, as we believe the series will educate Oklahomans about water," Fox said. "The video series also connects viewers to some outstanding Extension specialists at Oklahoma State University. Viewers may contact these individuals with any questions they have on these various water topics."
Video topics include surface water hydrology, groundwater hydrology, agriculturalirrigation, urban irrigation, water law and policy, and the Oklahoma Mesonet. While some of these topics address Oklahoma water issues specifically, many of them are equally suitable outside of the state to inform Extension educators and the public on key concepts in hydrology.
"Video topics were identified based on a survey of common questions received by county Extension educators," Fox said. "The video series is part of the Water Center's Extension/outreach mission in providing research-based information related to current water quantity and quality issues."
The Blue Ribbon Award recognized Fox, Craig Woods, Leslie Elmore, Shannon Ferrell, Justin Moss, Al Sutherland, Saleh Taghvaeian, Jason Vogel and Hailin Zhang for their contributions to the video series. Funding was provided by the Renewable Resources Extension Act.
