Burlington and Elgin FFA Chapters Among the Elite Chapters to be Honored at National Convention

The 88th National Convention of the FFA Organization is still two months away- but many of the students that will be competing for national titles at what could be the last national convention to be held in Louisville already have punched their ticket and know that they will be there at the the end of October.

Two Chapters, Burlington and Elgin, have separated themselves from other chapters across the state here in 2015, as both have been tabbed as Three Star Chapters- but have also been named as national finalists in both the Model of Innovation and Model of Excellence Competitions. Only ten chapters nationally are selected in each of these areas- and only Oklahoma has two chapters in both of these areas of national recognition.

The National Chapter Award program recognizes FFA chapters that successfully complete an annual Program of Activities (PoA) which includes a series of activities designed to encourage its members to grow as individuals, to work as part of a team, and to serve others. Chapters that receive a gold rating by their state FFA associations are eligible to compete for National FFA their 3-star, 2-star or 1-star ratings. Each chapter that competes for these awards will receive a multi-year plaque and a spur designating their 3-star, 2-star or 1-star rating. They will receive additional spurs for each year they compete and receive a rating from the National FFA Organization. Chapters that receive a national 3-star chapter rating will be eligible to compete for the National Model of Innovation, Model of Excellence and Outstanding Middle School Chapter Awards.

Thirteen other Oklahoma Chapters have qualified to be recognized at the National Convention as a Gold Chapter(or three star Chapter)- those chapters include Chickasha, Edmond, Elk City, Owasso, Timberlake, Tishomingo, Cement, Chelsea, Fairview, Oologah, Perkins Tryon, Stratford and Thomas-Fay-Custer. Twenty one other Oklahoma Chapters were recognized as Two Star Chapters by the National FFA in 2015. In recent years, Oklahoma has led the country in the number of chapters with a three star rating- but the 15 Three Stars places Oklahoma as the sixth most honored state in the national FFA- top honors from a state perspective goes to Missouri with 31 chapters earning three stars and Ohio with 26 chapters at that level. In 2014- Oklahoma had 28 chapters earn a three star award.

Oklahoma is unique in that a Chapter who earns the right to compete at the National level in any year must then sit out a year before having the chance to compete for a National Chapter award again.
