In a Junior Livestock Show- It's About the Kids Who Show the Animals- and Life Lessons Learned
Fri, 09 Oct 2015 05:58:59 CDT
Livestock shows are based upon the species of animals being shown to the judges- but Roy Lee Lindsay of the Oklahoma Pork Council says that he has really enjoyed watching the young men and women who are showing the animals at the 2015 Tulsa State Fair. Lindsay says "I'm so proud of the kids I see" and tells Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays a couple of examples why.
Lindsay first talked about the Grand Champion Market Barrow being selected- and how the young people showing the reserve breed champions showed tremendous sportsmanship in how they congratulated the winner of the market barrow show once his animal was selected by the judge- and how the exhibitors went out of their way to help the reserve Duroc owner move his animal into the main ring as the judge selected his Reserve Grand Champion Market Barrow. Lindsay says "it was really, really nice to see because that's not what you would expect- it's not what most people would expect. We're in competiiton with one another but we're all in this together" as he referred to how the 4-H and FFA members worked together in the show ring.
Lindsay also spoke with Hays about the animals that many exhibitors decided to donate to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma once the show was over. Lindsay says that more than 78 animals had been donated from animals that were a part of the slightly more than 800 market hogs that were shown at this year's Junior Livestock Show. The donated animals will be used to produce pork sticks that can be used in backpacks for kids to take home from school and have food over the weekend- often when there would be no food in their home for them otherwise.
Lindsay told Hays that "of all the things that happened- yes, we picked a Grand Champion, yes we are going to reward those kids...but what could be more uplifting than knowing that we had 78 animals donated to help feed hungry Oklahomans." (and it was reported later to the Oklahoma Farm Report that the number donated now is over 80)
Listen to the conversation that Ron Hays had with Roy Lee Lindsay about the lessons learned and the maturity shown by the 4-H and FFA members that were a part of the 2015 Tulsa State Fair Junior Livestock Show.
