New Small Grain Variety Demo
Fri, 20 Nov 2015 08:33:26 CST
Early fall-winter forage production is particularly valuable as it allows producers flexibility for earlier grazing or increased stockpiling. The goal of the small grains breeding program at the Noble Foundation is to develop cultivars with improved forage qualities, better fall production, improved ability to recover after grazing and better overall forage yields.
Come see five of the new small grain varieties, selected for increased early season forage yields, recently released by the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation. Varieties include NF101 wheat, NF201 triticale, Maton II rye, Heavy Grazer II oat and NF402 oat.
NF101 wheat - The main goal of the Noble Foundation's small grains breeding program is to develop dual-purpose cultivars with high fall and winter forage yield suitable for sustainable forage production in Oklahoma and north Texas, and better grain production. NF101 wheat is the first wheat cultivar developed at the Noble Foundation for this purpose.
NF201 triticale - Developed and released in 2013, NF201 triticale is an alternative small grain forage for producers. NF201 is the first forage triticale to be released by the Noble Foundation. NF201 has demonstrated excellent fall and winter forage production, making this triticale the best choice for producers who need forage for early winter grazing.
Maton II rye - Maton II is a forage rye cultivar that was developed and released in 2006. It is intended for use in fall through winter grazing systems. Maton II produces more total forage when compared to the commonly grown rye cultivars Elbon, Maton and Oklon in southern Oklahoma. More than half of its total yield is produced during the early growing season (November to February).
Heavy Grazer II oat - Heavy Grazer is a facultative, winter-type forage oat cultivar developed by the Noble Foundation and released in 2012. Heavy Grazer has excellent fall-winter and spring pasture and forage production potential. Heavy Grazer was selected and released for its superior forage production compared to the oat cultivars Harrison, Dallas and PlotSpike.
NF 402 oat - NF402 is a facultative winter-type forage oat that was developed and released in 2013. It is intended for pasture and forage production, especially during the fall-winter period. NF402 was selected and released based on superior forage production, especially in the fall and winter, when compared to standard oat cultivars like Dallas, Harrison and PlotSpike.
