USDA Undersecretary Bill Northey to Address Ranchers at 2018 Hemphill Beef Cattle ConferenceWed, 28 Mar 2018 11:02:20 CDT
Over the last four years, the Hemphill County Extension Service located in Canadian, Texas has built up an impressive beef cattle conference, originally as a continuing education opportunity for local producers - now catering to cattlemen across the country. Last year, the conference hosted producers from 11 states and 19 Texas counties. Coming up on April 24 and 25, producers will have the chance to attend the 2018 edition of the Hemphill Texas A&M AgriLife Beef Cattle Conference. Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays had the chance to speak with the event’s organizer Andy Holloway, who offered a glimpse at what is in store for attendees in 2018. Listen to their complete conversation by clicking or tapping the LISTEN BAR below at the bottom of the page.
With the ongoing drought as the backdrop to this conference, Holloway says there will be lots of timely and relevant information for farmers and ranchers to glean from the “power-packed” lineup of expert speakers slated to present this year.
“The conference this year is not only going to focus how we prepare for a wildfire, but how do we do things to make our cow herd more productive and efficient - even in difficult times,” Holloway said, adding that this conference will not only bring useful information to producers, but also encouragement. “It’s all about helping to learn about critical issues so we can all help each other not only face these things and survive but succeed and prosper even in times when others think that prosperity is not an option.”
Some of the featured speakers this year include Troy Applehans, CattleFax analyst; Dr. George Perry from South Dakota State University who will present of how to foster healthy productive calves from fetus to field; Dr. Clay Mathis, executive director of the King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management, sharing what today’s cow will look like 20 years from now and how producers can prepare; Richard Wortham of the Texas Beef Council; Donnell Brown of the RA Brown Ranch; and Oklahoma State University’s Dave Lalman.
Most exciting, though, may certainly be Undersecretary of Agriculture Bill Northey. As the No. 2 man at the United States Department of Agriculture and the 2018 Farm Bill negotiations underway - Holloway says attendees will certainly not want to miss his remarks. Attendees will also have the chance to interact with over 50 exhibitors at the event's trade show and to see local operations during ranch tours incorporated into the program as well.
