NCBA Fights Back on FDA's Challenge of USDA's Authority Over Fake Meat - Calls Industry to ActionFri, 26 Oct 2018 10:01:31 CDT
A two-day hearing held jointly by the Food & Drug Administration and the United States Department of Agriculture over the regulatory future of cell-based meat or as the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association calls it, “fake meat.” NCBA President Kevin Kester of California was there during this hearing to testify, during which he specifically addressed what cell-based products should be allowed to be called when they hit the market.
“We’re advocating that USDA be in control and have regulatory oversight for labeling and marketing claims. With USDA, product labels and marketing claims have to be pre-approved before they hit the market and wind up on grocery store shelves,” he said. “FDA does not have that process. So, we’ve seen things now like soy milk competing against common milk. FDA did nothing about those false marketing images. So, we want to make sure we don’t fall into that same trap that the milk industry had.”
Danielle Beck, works for NCBA on policy issues in DC. She says moving forward, the FDA and USDA will be accepting public comments on this matter. She says NCBA, its members and its state affiliates and their members are all encouraged to submit their comments in support of USDA’s jurisdiction over fake meat products. Very soon, NCBA will be providing sample draft letters that members can sign and send or edit and add to before submitting. These letters will be available on the organization’s website during the public comment period which closes on November 26, 2018. NCBA President-elect Jennifer Houston, who was also there to testify, stated that no doubt, it has to be USDA that is granted jurisdiction.
“It has to do with the continuous daily inspection that our product being produced safely everyday goes through which is very unlike what FDA does,” she said. “We feel like if these products are going to compete against us in the marketplace - they should be held to the same safety and regulatory standards that we have to do.”
