Oklahoma Cattlemen's Assoc. Celebrates 27 Years Serving Up Its Steak Sandwich at Tulsa State FairWed, 03 Oct 2018 14:28:18 CDT
For the past 26 years, the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association has served their steak sandwiches out of their Beef Tent location at the Tulsa State Fair. The OCA is back at the fair again this October for its 27th year and according to OCA Executive Vice President Michael Kelsey, the sandwich is still a favorite of fair-goers. He spoke about this milestone and the success of the sandwich with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays this week on location at the Tulsa State Fair. You can listen to their entire interview by clicking or tapping the LISTEN BAR below at the bottom of the page.
“This is such a great opportunity for us to promote beef and share with our members and producers here a Tulsa, as well as the consumer that comes to the fair,” Kelsey said about serving up the fair food favorite- the recipe for which Kelsey says has been refined over time. “There’s an art there to grilling the steak, but also to getting it to the consumer with proper food safety and appropriate handling.”
Not only is the OCA’s steak sandwich tasty- it is also a much healthier option as alternative to other traditional fried fair foods. In fact, OCA’s steak sandwich was named this year’s “Best Value” fair food by a local radio station in Tulsa (an honor it has won several times prior). Over the years, though, OCA has experimented with other foods, like the obvious hamburger for instance. However, Kelsey says customers have consistently come back year after year for one thing… the steak sandwich. And while the sandwiches sell themselves practically, Kelsey admits there is still a lot of hard work that goes into the endeavor each year.
“This would not work without volunteers from our county cattlemen’s associations,” he said. “It’s a lot of hard work but it’s a lot of fun too, to present our product to the public like this.”
The OCA Beef Tent is located between the livestock building at the Tulsa State Fair and the Midway. Kelsey says passing through to get your steak sandwich is a perfect opportunity to take advantage of both.
