R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard Sets Record Straight on Group's Alleged Ties to Human Society of the US

R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard Sets Record Straight on Group's Alleged Ties to Human Society of the US

Bill Bullard is the long-time CEO of R-CALF USA and he is not happy with some of the media coverage R-CALF has received from publications like Drover’s, which has made past claims that the organization has ties to the Humane Society of the United States. In no uncertain terms, Bullard responded to that claim in a recent interview with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays.

“We’ve taken some pretty aggressive steps to initiate fundamental reforms for our industry. Many that oppose our efforts have taken great exception into the work that we have done and rather than focus on the merits of the issues - instead they want to marginalize us claiming that we work with the HSUS,” Bullard said, adding. “We certainly do not work with that organization.”

The claim, Bullard explains, stems from the organization’s retention of lawyers that litigate on the group’s behalf. The significance of that is the fact that these same lawyers have represented and worked before under the direction of HSUS. Bullard continues that this fact is completely isolated from any assumptions being made about the nature of this relationship. He says these lawyers were sought out specifically for their unique expertise in Constitutional law to help fight for the causes supported by the organization’s members. However, further claims have been made linking R-CALF to HSUS through its collaboration with the known HSUS supporter group, the Organization for Competitive Markets.

“That group did in fact join HSUS and they invited us to join with them,” Bullard remembered. “We said absolutely not. We would not work with the HSUS and yet we recognize that they do. We do not have a working relationship with them, but we do work on some of the same issues from time to time and will stand together on those issues. But, because they do work with HSUS, we maintain an arm’s length from that organization.”
