Oklahoma Pecan Farmer Mike Spradling Hits the Big Apple- Starring in the Super American Pecan-A-Thon

Tue, 20 Nov 2018 04:31:31 CST

Oklahoma Pecan Farmer Mike Spradling Hits the Big Apple- Starring in the Super American Pecan-A-Thon Oklahoma Pecan Producer Mike Spradling and his wife Lotsee are being featured in the Super American Pecan-A-Thon- set to officially kick off November 20th. According to the American Pecan website, "American Pecans aren’t just a holiday favorite—they’re America’s only major native tree nut. They’re ours. We’re proud of ‘em. But between tariffs, hurricanes, and flooding, this year’s been tough on pecan growers. So, every pecan dish you make for your family will mean even more to our families. We’d sure appreciate you pledging to add one more pecan dish to your menu this year. (Or more! We have a lot of tasty ideas.)"

Spradling talked with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays about the Pecan-A-Thon- Spradling saying that Pecan farmers, like he and his wife, are "asking consumers to include pecans in one additional dish during the holiday season in addition to the traditional pecan pie."

Spradling says that when people think about pecans- they usually think about pecan pie- but pecans are much more than just a dessert. We've done work with the American Heart Association and we now have the heathly heart check now- it is one of the healthiest nuts- it is truly the American Supernut."

The idea behind the Pecan-A-Thon is to ask consumers to help out pecan farmers who have suffered through tariffs targeted against the pecan industry, floods and devastation caused by Hurricane Michael that destroyed thousands of trees in Georgia, one of the largest producing states in the United States.
