Arysta's 'UNLOCK 5' Can Help You Optimize Your Crop's Yield Potential- Lynn Justesen Explains How As corn and wheat growers look to the next production year, Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays enquired about what are some of the agronomic enhancements they can deploy to boost yield and profitability? Lynn Justesen, technical sales specialist, answered that enquiry, citing Arysta LifeScience’s introduction of its new product, UNLOCK 5™, which can help release more of a crop’s genetic potential and optimize producers’ financial returns. This solution includes RAZE™ 0-3-2 foliar nutrition, new and highly advanced technology designed specifically for optimizing corn and wheat production. “If we look at corn, soybeans, wheat - any of those crops - there’s lots of individual components you can plug and play into systems that we all talk about. We all say, ‘we’re going to add this or that,’” Justesen explained. “Quite honestly, I’m not sure that’s really what we’re doing. I think what we’re really doing is protecting the yield that’s intrinsically in that plant.”

The real issue and where confusion stems from, he says, is that producers have so many options out there available to them that are supposed to help improve yields. But, with so many options and product lines out there - producers are more and more confused about which product to use and furthermore, they have less of an understanding of what the root problem is in their crop and therefore can not make an accurate decision on how to address it. Justesen says the question eventually becomes - ‘So, which product do I use?’

“As a company, we took a step back and looked at what the plant life-cycle is and we’ve identified five key areas within that,” he said. “Establishment, plant architecture, photosynthesis, reproduction and then seed sizing - which ultimately leads to yield.

“We went into each one of those parts and identified key things that are happening within that plant in those areas, where stress factors could be accruing at any given time.”

Through this process, Justesen says Arysta is able to better understand what is going on in a crop and can determine which of the five key areas he described need supplemental attention in order to optimize a crop’s yield potential.

“Optimize - not maximize necessarily, but optimize,” he said. “That is really the big part we’re trying to get around. Optimize is really that key thing and I think it comes down to what are the biggest, most important things to fulfill. Once that’s done, we can start chipping away at those other things and by identifying a whole system, I think it gives you perspective on how to pick the right things.”
