Wheat Crop Expected to Reach First Hollow Stem by Week's End, Farmers Face Grazeout Decisions

Mon, 11 Mar 2019 11:09:59 CDT

Wheat Crop Expected to Reach First Hollow Stem by Week's End, Farmers Face Grazeout Decisions Jeff Edwards, Oklahoma State University Professor and Head of the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, has reported the first hollow stem measurements from this past Friday at Stillwater, see below. He notes that 10 varieties have reached FHS (>1.5 cm of hollow stem). With warm temperatures forecasted this week, Edwards anticipates most varieties will reach FHS by the end of the week. Whether removing cattle, controlling weeds, or topdressing, the window for taking care of critical crop management items he says is quickly closing.

First hollow stem has been identified as the optimal wheat growth stage for removing cattle from wheat pasture. According to an OSU Fact Sheet, wheat intended for grazing is generally sown in early September. Due to this earlier-than-optimal sowing date, grazed wheat will generally yield less than nongrazed wheat sown in mid-October. Since dual-purpose wheat producers are already dealing with reduced yield potential, as compared to a grain-only system, it is extremely important to protect the yield potential present by removing cattle from wheat pasture prior to first hollow stem. Research has shown that grazing past first hollow stem decreases grain yield by as much as five percent per day or as little as one percent per day. To determine the economic impact of grazing past first hollow stem on your farm, consult the Oklahoma Grazeout Decision Maker included with the OSU Fact Sheet on first hollow stem.

First hollow stem is affected by genetic and environmental factors. Varieties can differ by as much as three weeks in onset of first hollow stem, and later maturity varieties generally reach first hollow stem later. OSU researchers measure and record dates of first hollow stem of popular wheat varieties each year.

For instructions on how to check for first hollow stem in your field, refer to the aforementioned OSU Fact Sheet.
