OKFB's Caylie Holman Says they are Excited to host inaugural Youth Legislative Experience

The Youth Legislative Experience is coming up on July 12th and 13th at the state Capitol in Oklahoma City. Farm Director KC Sheperd had an opportunity to catch up with Caylie Holman, the Assistant Director of Public Policy at the Oklahoma Farm Bureau and Holman said the event is specifically for 4-H and FFA students and targets those who will be juniors and seniors.
"This year, since it is a first-time program, we don't want those that are graduating to miss out," Holman said. "Kind of, a case-by-case basis we are opening as well."
To those graduating seniors this year or those that are younger than a junior, Holman said they will be taking a look at those applications as well.
"We are going to be doing it in July; It is a two-day event," Holman said. "It is really just doing mock legislature system, so the students are going to get to introduce their own bills."
After introducing their bills, Holman said students will break up into committees to consider legislation that they either amend, move forward, or deny. Then, Holman noted that it will go to the full floor consideration of each chamber to be considered by the full body.
"During the event, we are also going to have opportunities for different elected officials, legislators, as well as the Governor and Secretary Arthur to come by and visit with them," Holman said.
Holman said she will also be current legislators and past members who want to be a part of the opportunity to guide the students along the process and give them an inside look at what the legislature does to provide them with opportunities to consider legislation.
This is an excellent opportunity, Holman said, for young people involved in 4-H and FFA to see and propose legislation that is important to them and give them a real chance to see what other opinions look like.
"We know as adults that not everyone always agrees with us, so it is going to give them the insight into what it looks like to propose something that seems like a great opportunity or a great idea to them," Holman said. "But someone from a different background or viewpoint might have a really good insight on what needs to change in legislation or why the legislation might not be good."
This will be a good helpful tool for students who will be upperclassmen in high school or going to college soon, Holman said. This will give them a head start on understanding how different opinions and views work, she added.
TO sign up for this event, students are advised to work through their 4-H leader or FFA advisor to send their application to FFA or 4-H.
"We are hoping to have 150 students total," Holman said.
Holman said taking this opportunity to learn and engage with students across the state and elected leaders will be beneficial for students' resumes.
Applications will be due June 1st.
