Ron Hays Talking Cattle Market Outlook with Jim Robb of the LMIC
Wed, 04 Jan 2017 12:11:00 CSTWas 2016 a disappointing year for the US Beef Cattle Industry? The Executive Director of the Livestock Market Information Center, Jim Robb, says that in some ways, 2016 did offer some disappointment for beef producers. Robb says that in 2016 "prices eroded and fall more quickly than anticipated- we hit some real lows in the fourth quarter of 2016- we had more beef production coming on line than we thought there was and more pork production and it took a while for the market to stabilize." He adds that while it was expected that prices would work their way lower in 2016- prices fell more than expected and that was a disappointment.
As for 2017- Jim Robb sees more beef in the pipeline but not the big dips in cattle prices seen this past year- and he sees profits for the cow calf producers who are low cost producers and are doing a good job of watching costs.
