House Ag Committee Chairman Frank Lucas- Hopeful About Getting Five Year Farm Bill This Go Round
Wed, 23 Jan 2013 21:33:38 CST
The Chairman of the House Ag Committee, Oklahoma Congressman Frank Lucas, is hopeful that a new five year farm bill can be passed by Congress and signed into law this year. However, the see little need to start markup of a new five year bill until some clarity can be had of the budget situation that the federal government will be facing the rest of this fiscal year and into the next couple of years. In a Wednesday conversation with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays, he does not believe that will happen before April or even May- pushing markup well into the spring of this year at best.
The ranking member of the House Ag Committee, Collin Peterson of Minnesota, offered guarded optimism earlier on Wednesday that something could be worked out with House Speaker John Boehner in regards to allowing any House Ag Committee passed farm bill to be considered in "regular order" and receive floor time and a possible vote for final passage. Those comments were a part of his opening remarks during the business meeting to organize the House Ag Committee for the next two years.
In the conversation that Chairman Lucas had with Hays, there was a discussion of what it would take to get House floor consideration here in 2013, the 2013 farm bill extension and whether or not it will face cuts under sequestration and how the fiscal issues may shape the next farm bill as well as when a farm bill markup might become feasible. He also talked about US Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack and his decision to stay into the second term of the President ("we don't need to train a new Secretary.") as well as his thoughts on whoever might be the next EPA Administrator for the Obama Administration.
