From the 2015 Cattle Industry Convention -Ron Hays and Bob Drake Discuss Upcomg Beef Checkoff Vote
Wed, 04 Feb 2015 14:35:42 CST
The future of the Beef Checkoff is being discussed inside several of the meeting rooms here at the 2015 Cattle Industry Convention- and in a lot of the hallways and at least a few of the bars where cattlemen frequent when not at one of the sessions or in the huge Trade Show.
One of those talking with a lot of his fellow cattlemen is Bob Drake, former President of the old National Cattlemen's Association- the predecessor organization for today's National Cattlemen's Beef Association. Drake sat down and talked with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays about the vote set for this coming Saturday for the NCBA Board here in San Antonio. Drake predicts that it will pass and tells Hays that he will vote for it, but cannot fully support it.

Drake questions whether it is really a binding agreement among the groups or not- and says that he fears opening the law passed in 1986 that is the basis for today's dollar a head beef checkoff. He believes that state based checkoffs like the one recently enacted by Texas and now under consideration by Oklahoma is a far better solution in the effort to increase resources for programs that need to be funded by these type of resources.
